Kansas City couple killed in train crash driving home from Thanksgiving dinner
An elderly couple was killed in a crash involving a train in rural Kansas on Thursday night while driving home from their family’s Thanksgiving dinner, according to local officials.
Officials believe that a freight train plowed through the vehicle of the couple, which was located in Miami County at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
While the train attempted to slow down, the vehicle was being pushed along the tracks. According to officials, the vehicle caught fire just before it was due for a stop.
These elderly victims are all from Kansas City and were on their way to Thanksgiving dinner. After the accident, their adult son was reportedly at the scene.
“This is an emotional call for anybody involved in this,” said Capt. Matthew Kelly with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said, according to KCTV. “Not just for the family but also for us on scene. This is something that no one wants to do. This is a very stressful situation for everyone involved. This is something that anyone can relate to. I think it makes it even more traumatic on a holiday like this.”
He said his department has reached out to the victim’s family to offer any assistance.
The investigation — which will include checking whether the crossing’s railways and lights were functioning properly — is ongoing, officials said.
