Audio: Islanders’ Mike Mottau relives draft day fluke
Imagine being called by your brother’s name on one of the biggest days of your life.
Well, that huge mistake actually happened to New York Islanders defenseman Mike Mottau.
In the seventh round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Rangers selected Mottau, but his brother’s name, Rob Mottau, was announced at the podium.
Although Rob Mottau was playing hockey at the time and was the one responsible for getting Mike involved in the sport, Rob’s talent level was nowhere near his little brother.
“I said to them, ‘I think you made a mistake,’” Mike Mottau said in an interview with WRHU. ‘“I’m Mike, you called my brother Rob.’ They wouldn’t let me down because they thought my brother was in the stands.”
The draft error was eventually sorted out, but Mottau said he would never forget that uncanny series of events.
